'We drove 1KM OUT TO SEA': the Cape York crew picks its trip apart around the fire
Shaun Whale, Graham Cahill and the team close their Cape York series with a campfire debrief, and viewers answer with routes for the old rigs.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 137,498 views a day, 9.8 times a normal first day on this channel (13,968).
'We drove 1KM OUT TO SEA...' How we survived Australia's Most Dangerous Beach Run - TELL ALL
A longer video from 4WD 24-7 usually opens with about 14,000 views on its first day. The Cape York tell-all had passed 128,000 in 21 hours.
It is the closing chapter of a series that, as we reported here, went back to the trip that started it all 15 years ago. This time there is no new driving. Shaun, Graham and the crew sit around a fire, drinks in hand, and go back over the ground. The description sums up how close it came: a camp swallowed by the tide, a sleepless night on the roof, and a drive a kilometer out to sea just to get clear of the water.
The chapters work like a highlight reel. Everyone gets a favorite moment: Tim crossing the salt flats, Graham's night on the roof, Pete going remote, Shaun fishing. Then come the side stories: a croc at El Arish, a tunnel at Cape Flattery, a fire on the track, a reset at Coen and the final push to the Tip. Shaun's glass ball, the find from the beach, gets a segment of its own.
The two old rigs, Shorty and the Dirty 30, were the draw of the series, and the comments have turned into a planning meeting. Viewers want them out again and come with routes. Some suggest Tasmania or a Simpson Desert crossing. Others want Brisbane to Perth off road, or a coast-to-coast run from Shaun's hometown to Graham's. One asks for a return to the Victorian High Country, where a diff gave out.
The channel's newer Shorts are back in the shed, with late nights on a 60 Series LandCruiser build.

Thumbs up for more shorty & OG 30 trips.
@paul_wheelinSee it on YouTubeWould be great to see the old two vehicles travelling east to west starting from Shauno's homtown to Graham's hometown. That would be 4WD epic.
@akcellr8r75See it on YouTubeThe Dirty 30 needs to do the redemption in the Vic high country where the diff gave up and had to be moved on.
