Brighton sea deaths: Coroner rules three sisters intended to take their own lives

Daniel Rosney stood in Brighton for 5 News and reported on how an inquest ended: Jane Adetoro, 36, Christina Walters, 32, and Rebecca Walters, 31, three sisters from Greenford in west London, intended to take their own lives when they entered the sea on May 13. Senior coroner Penelope Schofield told the court the sisters had lived very private, secluded lives and that their reasons may never be known.

The report is under three minutes long. Rosney follows the sisters' last days: a taxi to Birmingham, to the street where their mother had lived before she died in 2010, the trip back to London, and then the ride to the seafront. The post-mortem found no drugs or alcohol and no sign of violence.

The report closes on their father, Joseph Jacobson. Rosney reads from his statement: "There are no words that can adequately express the pain of losing a child." Later comes the line "I want the world to know you were deeply loved." The studio presenter then gives the Samaritans number.

The report had passed 123,000 views in its first twelve hours. A new 5 News Short usually ends its first day with about 7,000. Much of the comment section is about the father, and many viewers are still asking the question the coroner left open.
