- 0:48Austin introduces a calculated sunset score, separate from the personal tier list he builds alongside it.
- 3:54Skyrim's older skybox approach earns Austin's personal S-tier rating despite its lower calculated placement.
- 9:00The formula combines article appearances, thread mentions and logarithmically scaled supporter engagement, demonstrated using Subnautica.
- 14:57Minecraft's sunset matters to Austin partly because it plays a role in the flow of the game.
- 21:05Red Dead Redemption 2 tops the calculation; Austin highlights its light and shadows beyond the sunset itself.
Skyrim gets an S. Its older skybox technology doesn't stop Any Austin from putting its sunsets in his personal top tier, even though his mathematical ranking places the game farther down the list.
That distinction is the fun of "The (Objectively) Best Video Game Sunsets": a calculated measure of what people mention online, running alongside one man's taste in evening light. The video has drawn nearly half a million views in nine hours, already well beyond the channel's usual full first day.
Austin builds his Any Austin Sunset Score from articles, discussion-thread mentions and supporter engagement, using logarithms in the calculation. He even pauses to ask: "Why do we use the logarithm? Also, what is a logarithm?" One commenter identifying themselves as a math teacher says they intend to use the formula when introducing the subject to students.
But this isn't simply a popularity table. Austin examines Mad Max's long sunsets and sky gradients, Horizon Forbidden West's layered clouds and Breath of the Wild's color palette. Minecraft earns particular attention because sunset isn't just scenery: it helps shape the flow of play. Viewers add their own observations about wandering in search of landscapes and watching stars appear above the blocks.
The video includes a sponsored segment for Mint Mobile.
For a creator whose most-watched regular upload follows GTA V's overlooked rivers, studying the sky is a natural extension of looking past a game's main objectives. His calculated top spot goes to Red Dead Redemption 2, where he singles out sunlight and shadows across landscapes and town streets, even when the player looks away from the sun.

Maths teacher here. Your A.A.S.S formula is the best use of logarithms since the Richter scale was invented. I will genuinely be using this as an example in the future when I introduce logarithms to students.
