Grandmother's pink ring gets a second look on BBC Antiques Roadshow

John Benjamin examines an Art Deco heirloom its owner had long mistaken for glass, in a clip filmed at Cardiff Castle in 2017.

A grandmother's gift can carry a story that turns out to be wrong. Given this ring as a teenager, its owner understood that it wasn't particularly valuable and spent years assuming the pink stone was glass. Jewelry expert John Benjamin's closer look supplies the discovery in BBC Antiques Roadshow's most watched new clip.

The stone is pink tourmaline, set with sapphires and diamonds. The upload, "'I Thought It Was Glass' Art Deco Ring Leaves Owner Stunned With Valuation | Antiques Roadshow UK", has drawn about 400,000 views. In the replies, viewers discuss the rich blue accents, the setting and whether the broadcast valuation was too modest. One points out that glass would be an unusual centerpiece to surround with precious stones. These are archive appraisals, with valuations dating to the original broadcasts rather than today's market.

The BBC Studios clips channel posted four uploads. Susan Rumfitt's jewelry compilation ranges from Victorian brooches to Edwardian earrings and Art Deco rings, and is the next busiest video for daily views. Elsewhere, Chinese plates passed down after a royal wedding gift bring inscriptions dating to 1770, while Rupert Maas questions the suggested artist behind a favorite Windsor Castle painting.

The channel added roughly 1.8 million views over the week, with subscribers unchanged. That puts its weekly viewing near Etalk and Shameless among similarly sized television channels; Star Trek had a smaller week. Daily viewing is also higher than the Roadshow channel's usual pace.

Beyond the new jewelry clips, the Swedish stoneware auction find remains active: an overlooked mark gives a modest purchase a fresh design-history question.

What viewers say

  • It would take an extraordinary piece of glass to require accents of sapphires and diamonds.
  • This is probably one of the most interestingly beautiful rings that I've ever seen, after watching thousands of episodes of AR. The valuation seems quite low, for what it is.

  • I’m not one for rings, generally, but that one is a beauty! The Art Deco period, imo, was the golden age of design and I doubt we will ever see anything like it. Jewelry, automobiles, buildings, decorative arts, furniture … the list goes on.
