Joe Hart explains the dive behind Pickford's missed save

BBC Football's Match of the Day clip looks beyond the ball slipping under a hand to the decisions a goalkeeper makes before seeing the shot.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 121,422 views a day, 17 times a normal first day on this channel (7,106).

Pickford's view was blocked. Joe Hart points to Everton teammate Vitaliy Mykolenko's position, then works through why a save that looks awkward on replay was much harder than it appeared.

In BBC Football's Short, the former England goalkeeper analyzes Jordan Pickford conceding against Chelsea. First comes the possibility of a cutback, then Cole Palmer missing his shot. By the time Pedro Neto threatens the goal, Pickford has already had several different dangers to consider.

Hart explains that Pickford commits early, almost as though facing a penalty. His diving technique puts his hand at a middle height, allowing him to cover either a high or low effort. But with his sightline obstructed, he cannot immediately identify where the ball is going. When the low shot emerges, he tries to force his hand down and narrowly misses it.

Hart's conclusion is that Pickford came close to an excellent save, rather than simply failing at an obvious one.

That explanation drew roughly 120,000 views in its first day, about seventeen times BBC Football's usual start for a Short. The comment section was unusually busy, too. Viewers discuss learning how to read goalkeeping replays, with several drawing a distinction between a goalkeeper explaining the mechanics and an outfield player simply saying the shot should have been saved.

  • Fair play to him, good explanation for the masses who aren’t goal keepers and he doesn’t sound arrogant but just informative.
