A vascular surgeon explains the clots sidelining Jalen Hurts
Tom Hanson's report follows the Eagles quarterback from a clot in his calf to a diagnosis in his lungs, and the trip to London in between.

Jalen Hurts' devastating diagnosis rattles sports world
It started in his calf. Jalen Hurts, the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback, had a superficial clot found in his leg, flew to London, played, and was then diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis and a pulmonary embolism. The team's season may now go on without him.
Tom Hanson's short report for CBS Evening News lays out that timeline and then hands it to a specialist. Dr. Thomas Maldonado, a professor of vascular surgery at NYU Langone's Grossman School, explains what happens when a clot forms in the deep veins: "one of the risk is it can dislodge," traveling to the lungs, and "that can be a very dangerous, even fatal condition."
The report also asks why Hurts was cleared to play after taking a cleat to the leg in an earlier game. Coach Nick Sirianni's answer is brief: "Guys, I'm not a medical expert. I lean on our guys in all those situations." Maldonado lists the general risk factors for such clots, among them trauma, immobility on long flights and dehydration. Hurts has missed the past two games and is taking blood thinners.
The Short drew about 300,000 views in its first day, and its comments arrived roughly sixteen times faster than usual. Many come from people who introduce themselves as fans of other teams, Cowboys, Chiefs, Packers, Jets, all sending the same wish for his recovery. Others repeat the report's own question about the flight to London. A few viewers describe living with clots of their own.
