A gun and ammunition found in a closed Salford nursery, two men arrested
Greater Manchester Police say the shutdown of Mini Fingers Day Nursery earlier in the week has nothing to do with what officers found inside.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 39,907 views a day, 11 times a normal first day on this channel (3,620).
Police SWARM building as GUN and ‘large amounts of ammunition’ found in Salford nursery
Mini Fingers Day Nursery in Irlam, on the Salford edge of Greater Manchester, had already closed for good earlier in the week when police vehicles gathered outside it. Officers found a gun and what Greater Manchester Police called a "substantial quantity" of ammunition on the premises. Two men were arrested.
The Mirror's Short on the scene, "Police SWARM building as GUN and 'large amounts of ammunition' found in Salford nursery", passed 30,000 views within 14 hours. A Short from the paper usually ends its whole first day with a few thousand.
According to the description, police were pictured outside the building that morning with two Tactical Aid Unit vans. Some parents may have read the news with a sense of whiplash. An email from the nursery manager had already told families that the owner was closing the business and that the staff were devastated. The Manchester Evening News reported that parents had also been told about a collapsed drain and vermin. Police say the earlier closure is "entirely unrelated" to their investigation.
It was a heavy news day on the channel. A longer roundup from the Christa Pike hearing in Nashville, where a judge ordered evidence from the failed execution to be preserved, also ran well past what a regular Mirror video usually draws. A report on a 24-year-old Royal Navy sailor charged with spying for an unnamed foreign power came in close behind. Of the three, the local story from Salford moved fastest.
