A mushroom plays supporting role in Daniel Aucoin's forest photography
A turkey tail backdrop and carefully placed water droplets turn a weathered mushroom into an elaborate macro portrait.

I Used a Mushroom to Photograph a Mushroom
Nothing new, plenty to explore. Daniel Aucoin posted no videos this week, but “I Used a Mushroom to Photograph a Mushroom” remains the busiest title on his active shelf, with more than 1.8 million views.
The subject's dry texture and twisted stem caught his eye. The background needed something else, so he placed a turkey tail mushroom behind it to create a half-circle shape, then added tiny water droplets with a syringe. Lit and thrown out of focus, those droplets became soft highlights. The finished photograph has an apt name: Supporting Role.
His more recent “This Mushroom Is Smoking” takes a different approach to tiny forest subjects, freezing a puffball's release of spores. The final image combines separate frames for the mushroom and the airborne spores. “Building Light Around a Tiny Flower” also continues drawing views, turning an easily missed flower beside moss-covered wood into a study in controlled light.
The channel added about 2,000 subscribers over the week, though daily viewing is running at less than half its usual pace. Nearby, WHOLEHEARTED Sewing Tutorials & Tools had a particularly busy week. For Aucoin, the upload break leaves room for the patient, small-scale experiments already in his catalog.
