Japanese subtitles for 'Punching the Flowers', with Osaka on fans' minds
Three songs from I Built You A Tower went up with Japanese lyrics on the same day, ahead of the band's shows in Japan.

Why would Death Cab for Cutie's official channel post three songs in one go, all with the same Japanese brackets in front of the title? The descriptions answer it: each one carries a full Japanese translation of the lyrics, and the first points listeners toward tickets for the band's visit to Japan.
The songs all come from I Built You A Tower, the new album out on ANTI- Records. "Punching the Flowers" is the full music video, directed and edited by Jason Lester, with choreography by Masha Cherezova and six dancers. "Riptides" arrives with its own production crew in the credits, and "Stone Over Water" is an animated video directed by Sean Solomon. The album was produced and engineered by John Congleton, the Texas producer whose credits run from St. Vincent to Angel Olsen.
"Punching the Flowers" drew the most attention, a little over 5,000 views in its first 19 hours, with "Riptides" just behind. Its comment section reads like a travel plan: several viewers write in Japanese that they are going to the Osaka show and have been playing the album on repeat to get ready, and one simply says Tokyo is waiting. Another viewer asks, half joking, whether the video could really have been shot in Walla Walla.
About a thousand new subscribers arrived over the week. Among the rock bands nearest the channel in size, The Drums and Architects had far busier weeks, but for a band from Bellingham nearly thirty years in, the Japanese lyric sheets are the real news.
