Sybil leaves for nurse training, and Violet gets the last word

The official Downton Abbey channel posted five clips from the first three series, from a wartime goodbye at the station to new footman Alfred's dinner table mishaps.

Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.

"Sybil Departs for Training" is the most watched of the five clips the official Downton Abbey channel posted this week, and it is a gentle one. Sybil packs her things, says goodbye to her mother and sisters, and climbs into the car with Branson at the wheel, off to become a nurse in the middle of the war. Violet, as ever, has a view on how responsibilities are changing.

Viewers have plenty to say about her. When Edith offers to drive Sybil, the Dowager's reply about Sybil taking enough chances with her life already is the line the comments keep returning to. Others watch Mary at the edges of the scene, biting her tongue at the thought of Edith as a chauffeur, and several say Sybil's courage here explains why she and Tom made sense together.

The newest upload is moving faster. "Kitchen Ambitions and Dinner Table Blunders" sends Daisy to Thomas, frustrated that her promotion to assistant cook has stalled, while upstairs the tall new footman Alfred fumbles his way through dinner service and Violet has a quip ready about his height. Martha Levinson, Cora's American mother, is on her way.

The rest of the week ran on reunions and partings: Vera's ultimatum to Bates, Sybil and Tom's arrival at Downton with Carson stiffly formal toward his former chauffeur, and Mary handing Matthew her childhood lucky charm, a small stuffed dog, at the train station.

The channel drew around a million views over the week, a little above its usual pace, while the subscriber count held still. Among similar TV channels, Two and a Half Men and Young Sheldon had the big weeks; Downton sat comfortably in the middle.

  • Sybil was always the bravest of them. I think it’s why her and Isobel get along so well.

  • 0:47 Mary’s biting her tongue at the idea of Edith becoming a chauffeur
  • Of COURSE Sybil is the first to dispense with rank or privilege & bravely answer the call for help. Easy to see why she & Tom were a match 🥰
