Breaking Bad's RJ Mitte Dead at 34 | E! News
Nearly half a million people watched E! News's report on RJ Mitte's death within six hours of its posting. A Short on this channel usually draws around 16,000 views in a full day.
The report says Mitte's representative confirmed to E! News that he died on October 12 in Brownsville, Texas, at 34. The statement describes him as a "beloved actor, philanthropist, and passionate disability rights advocate."
The segment begins with the role that made him known: Walter White Jr., the son who goes by Flynn, opposite Bryan Cranston's Walter White on AMC's Breaking Bad. Archival photos of the cast run alongside it. "Mitte brought his own experience with cerebral palsy to the screen," the narrator says, before turning to his work with United Cerebral Palsy, Shriners Children's and the Mitte Foundation.
It then covers his later films, among them The Oak Room and The Recall, and ends with the premiere of Talking to Strangers. "He made his final public appearance 12 days before his death," the narrator notes, over the film's poster.
The comments usually number a handful under the channel's Shorts. This time there were more than a thousand. Many are from viewers with disabilities who thank him for speaking up. One remembers meeting him at a fundraising appearance for Shriners, and others say returning to Breaking Bad will not feel the same.
E! News has since posted two follow-ups. One reports that his representative confirmed he died by suicide. That report carries a content warning and directs anyone who needs help to the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. The other carries Cranston's tribute to "my sweet son on Breaking Bad." Cranston recalls meeting him when Mitte was 14, and says the two had been texting only weeks earlier about meeting for lunch.
