Imaginary movies give The Film Theorists a very real debate
Sinbad's nonexistent genie movie and Tumblr's invented Scorsese epic join a new Self Aware Robot investigation.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
The Fake Movies You THINK You Saw! | Film Theory
Remembering a movie that never existed is one thing. Helping invent it is another, and that distinction has become the talking point beneath "The Fake Movies You THINK You Saw! | Film Theory."
The Film Theorists' most-watched new upload explores the supposed Sinbad genie film often called Shazaam, contrasting it with Shaquille O'Neal's real Kazaam. It then moves through fictional films and internet inventions, including Goncharov, the elaborate Tumblr creation presented as a lost Martin Scorsese movie. Fans built out posters, characters and lore for a film nobody needed to shoot.
Several commenters draw a firm line here: Goncharov was a shared creative joke, not a collective false memory. Others remember watching the invention unfold on Tumblr. It's a useful wrinkle in an essay about how imaginary movies acquire a life of their own. The upload has reached roughly 577,000 views.
The week's other release, "Film Theory: It Can SEE YOU! (Self Aware Robot)," turns to an indie horror series full of murderous machines and hidden messages. Its investigation asks whether the real monster might be something other than the robot. It currently draws the most daily views of the channel's uploads, followed by September's "Film Theory: Buddy Tried to WARN us!", which searches beneath a cuddly unicorn's cheerful exterior for unsettling children's-show lore.
Across the channel, subscribers were unchanged over the week, while daily viewing is running below its usual level. Nearby, How It Should Have Ended is close to its normal daily pace and New Rockstars is having a livelier spell. For The Film Theorists, the week's two uploads offer distinctly different puzzles: a machine that might know too much, and viewers who remember more cinema than cinema actually contains.

@standardhuman8675See it on YouTubeI remember back when Goncharov was first being dreamt up by tumblr. It was hilarious watching it all unfold in real time.

Goncharov doesn't count as an example of the Mandela effect! Nobody was actually insisting they saw it; it was all kayfabe.
