From Lille to Tirana, Fox Report follows France's spreading protests
Correspondent Stephanie Bennett describes students, unions and yellow vests marching together, as footage reaches Albania and Belgium.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 190,817 views a day, 24 times a normal first day on this channel (7,952).
DEVELOPING: France's protests inspire other European cities
"John, this was a convergence of grievances," Stephanie Bennett tells the anchor from London. In her account, students, trade unions and yellow-vest demonstrators all ended up in the streets of France at once.
The Fox Report segment, posted on Fox News Clips, runs under two minutes. It opens with tear gas in Lille, then moves to a burning tourism office in Lyon and overturned cars on fire in Paris. Bennett calls it "the largest and broadest day of action." A protester in a yellow vest, dubbed into English, gives his reason for being there: "If we don't hold demonstrations, we cannot be heard."
The government's reply comes next. Bennett reports that the prime minister says the government will not be intimidated, and that President Emmanuel Macron has said there is no place for violence in France. The clip's last stretch shows water cannons in Tirana, Albania, and further demonstrations in Belgium. Bennett ends on France's presidential election, six months away.
The clip passed 170,000 views within 19 hours. A short upload on this channel usually draws a few thousand on its first day. The comments also arrived quickly, nearly matching the likes.
It was not the channel's only quick starter of the day. Mike Tobin's report on Michigan's Senate race between Abdul El-Sayed and Mike Rogers also opened far above the usual pace. Byron Donalds also spoke about the unrest in France, in an interview mostly about Florida's governor's race.
