Starlink cuts out at speed, and Kyiv asks SpaceX, Washington and NATO why

Angela Diffley, FRANCE 24's international affairs editor, ties the drone disruption to a wider question about what Ukraine's American partners are still sharing.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 156,990 views a day, 15 times a normal first day on this channel (10,509).

Ukraine's drone pilots have a problem that sounds technical and may turn out to be political. Troops say their Starlink connection shuts off when they travel at higher speeds, and the fast drones that hunt Russian supply routes depend on that link to be flown.

In FRANCE 24 English's segment, Angela Diffley explains that Kyiv plans to put the question to SpaceX, to Washington and to NATO. "The Ukrainians want to know what happened there and if it's likely to happen again and is this a change of policy," she says. Starlink terminals began arriving in Ukraine within days of Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022, and the service has since become part of how the country fights.

Diffley does not stop at the satellites. She notes the unease in Kyiv about Elon Musk's public criticism of Volodymyr Zelensky, then turns to intelligence. Donald Trump denies the US stopped sharing it, while Ukraine says it had no warning before Russian strikes on its energy system that, by the figures on screen, left at least 600,000 people without power. She also cites reports that Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff warned Kyiv that intelligence cooperation would shrink if it rejected an energy ceasefire.

The four-minute segment passed 120,000 views in its first 14 hours, and its comment section filled far faster than the channel's usual, with many viewers debating whether Europe should rely on one American company's satellites. A companion interview with David Galbreath, a professor of war and technology at the University of Bath who calls the restriction "no surprise", started almost as fast, as did Gulliver Cragg's report from Kyiv.

The same day, the channel's coverage of India's youth-led "Cockroach" protests, whose leader's detention we reported here, also drew a crowd well beyond its usual start.
