Zach Cregger's Resident Evil and the curse Matt wants broken
Full Fat Videos asks whether the 2026 film is finally the decent RE movie, and its comment section turned into a debate about fatherhood, Umbrella and Leon.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
THE RESIDENT EVIL CURSE
"THE RESIDENT EVIL CURSE" is the one new video on Full Fat Videos, the film, TV and games channel run by Matt, and it asks a question fans of the series have been asking for a quarter of a century: is there finally a properly decent Resident Evil movie? The description puts the 2026 film, directed by Zach Cregger of Barbarian and Weapons, beside the much-mocked Netflix series and the run of 2000s films, and wonders whether it breaks the pattern or joins it.
The comments read like a film-club evening. One of the most liked lays out a reading of the ending in which the monster that fuses people together mirrors the lead's fear of becoming a father; another wishes the film had tied that fatherhood theme to Umbrella Corporation itself. A newcomer to the games asks why longtime fans are so hard on a film that, to an outsider, finally looks like the Batman Begins of the franchise. And a few viewers simply want Matt to go play Resident Evil 7 and 8.
The essay opened with about 10,000 views on its first day and is the channel's quickest mover, well ahead of older pieces such as "The Boys Fell Off", the verdict on that show's final season, which has passed 170,000 views and keeps turning up. Overall the week ran a little below the channel's usual pace, with the subscriber count steady at about 343,000.
Among the movie and TV commentary channels nearest its size, Eggdar is having an enormous week and Skip Intro is running well above its normal pace, while The Flick Pick sits quiet.

I read an interpretation that really helped tie the fatherhood theme up with the end for me. Bryan is afraid of being a dad, of his relationship suddenly becoming a family with a child instead of just two people in love and losing the comfort of individuality. So ofc the big monster that chases him throughout the film ends up being a creature that consumes and fuses people together, losing the individual in service for a larger unit. Like how when you become a father, your life is no longer just your own but in the fucked up sense. It why its ironic that when bryan is finally ready to become …
@dankwave793Read it all on YouTubeAs an outsider who has never played the games, I'm kinda confused as to why so many fans of the series are so quick to nitpick and hate on this movie for how different it is from the games. For my entire life, the RE movies have always been a punch line for video game movie jokes. Its like having a dozen Batman and Robin movies back to back for years and then you get a Batman Begins movie and all of the fans are complaining that there will never be a good Batman movie. Like sure, this movie probably isn't perfect, but it seems like it was made with a lot more love and care for the video game …

I think the curse is absolutely been broken in the sense that the formula has been cracked. This is how you structure and film a Resident Evil movie. When a newer movie does do a closer to adaptation of the game it needs to draw on this structure as its blueprint.
@zaktookthis1See it on YouTubeI felt that they could have made the fatherhood theme stronger by leaning more into learning about Umbrella Corp.
Fundamentally, Umbrella Corp created something, took little to no responsibility over it, passed on the burden to someone who shouldn’t be expected to deal with the problem, all the while they don’t deal with the consequences until they show up at their front door, at which point they just continue to run and avoid responsibility like the plague.
It’s essentially(symbolically) a guidebook of avoiding the responsibility for/abandoning a child, and leaning into that would’ve mad…@thecod2345Read it all on YouTubeComing from a guy that's been playing the games since the PS1, I'm now 40 ,the first half of 7 is genuinely brilliant and 8 is amazing.
