Jorge Masvidal & Ben Askren FINALLY Sit Down After The Flying Knee

The most famous five seconds of Ben Askren's fighting life belonged to Jorge Masvidal. At UFC 239 in 2019, Masvidal's flying knee ended their fight before Askren could shoot a single takedown, still the fastest knockout in UFC history. Now the two are sitting across from each other on FULL SEND MMA, and the knee is the last thing they get to.

Masvidal opens with a line that sets the tone: "Somebody that I've looked at through many different lenses and never quite thought we'd be at this frame that we're in now." He then tells the story of being invited to Askren's baptism and going, a moment he describes as humbling.

Askren's side is heavier. He talks about the staph infection that put him in a coma ("I was asleep for 38 days"), about dying clinically four times, about the double lung transplant, and about his wife pushing him to the hospital. He also admits something rarely said between former opponents: that after their fight he envied Masvidal's stardom, and that his faith made him face that jealousy. He says he grew up without religion before turning to Christianity.

From there it becomes a wrestler's conversation. Askren, a 2008 Olympian in freestyle wrestling, names his early coaches and heroes, and the talk moves through Sean Strickland, Khamzat Chimaev, Tyron Woodley and Muhammad Ali before the knee gets its long-awaited breakdown.

Posted two days ago, it drew about 150,000 views in its first day, well beyond this channel's usual start, and its comments came in roughly nine times faster than usual. Many of them say some version of the same thing: nobody in 2019 would have pictured this table.
