Squadron 42's space navy comes with a Hollywood cast

GameTrailers' wishlist trailer has drawn an unusually large audience, while viewers keep returning to the long wait for release.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 168,739 views a day, 16 times a normal first day on this channel (10,612).

The player starts as a rookie; the cast is anything but. Squadron 42 puts Mark Hamill, Gary Oldman, Gillian Anderson and Henry Cavill among the familiar faces in its single-player space adventure.

"Squadron 42 - Official Wishlist Trailer" has reached roughly 123,000 views in 13 hours on GameTrailers, IGN's home for game trailers. That's already far beyond the channel's usual first-day audience of around 11,000 for this format.

Set in the Star Citizen universe, the game casts players as a new recruit in the United Empire of Earth's navy. A capital ship serves as their base, with crew relationships and difficult decisions woven into a journey toward galactic war. The description gives a planned release window of the second quarter of 2027.

That last detail is a major talking point beneath the trailer. Viewers make elaborate jokes about growing old before they get to play, with one turning the game's distant-future setting into an imaginary release date. Others pick out the bagpipes or recognize echoes of Wing Commander, the earlier space-combat series. The conversation mixes details from the trailer with a recurring insistence that a release date and a playable game are different things.

GameTrailers also has another unusually strong upload in "Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds - Official Year Two DLC Overview." Its crossover lineup heads in a very different direction: Bayonetta, Aigis from Persona 3, Godzilla and Final Fantasy 7 content are all named in the preview.
