Half as Interesting takes IMAX beyond the giant screen

Ben Doyle's cinema-logistics explainer gives viewers film formats to untangle and material for the annual corrections video.

Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.

The Logistics of IMAXThe Logistics of IMAX

An IMAX explainer was always likely to attract people who know their projection equipment. Under Half as Interesting's only new upload, viewers are getting into the fine print: film dimensions, aspect ratios and which kind of ticket actually appears in the price comparison.

"The Logistics of IMAX," written by Ben Doyle, has drawn roughly 445,000 views since its Wednesday release. Several commenters flag a displayed aspect ratio and the explanation of film orientation, nominating both for the channel's annual corrections video. Another recognizes the subject from an earlier collection of video ideas that never got made. For regular viewers, even the correction ritual has its own continuity.

The cinema outing is also the channel's busiest video right now. Behind it, Amy Muller's "Why Rolex Won't Sell You Their Most Expensive Watches" continues to attract viewers, joined by "What is the World's Biggest Hole Humans Have Ever Dug?" Luxury retail, enormous excavations and projection booths make a suitably varied set of logistical rabbit holes.

Across the channel, daily viewing is more than twice its usual level, while the week brought about 10,000 additional subscribers. Nearby in the education neighborhood, Economics Explained is also seeing daily views well above its usual pace, while mathantics had no subscriber change over the week.

For HAI, the new cinema subject has supplied both the biggest fresh audience and a particularly technical conversation: viewers aren't just discussing how large the picture is, but how the film gets there.

  • 3:02 1.43-to-1 somehow turned into 1-to-43
  • 1:13 nope lol, one for the corrections video. the strip of film itself is called 70mm because it's 70mm wide. when that strip of film is passed through an IMAX camera, it does so horizontally, creating a frame which therefore must be 70mm _tall_ ; the 15 perforations then refers the _width_ of the frame
