Super Mario 64 turns 30, and Rob Man is back on the couch with Johnny
Johnny Millenium's one upload of the week looks back at Nintendo's 1996 leap into 3D, then and now.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
SUPER MARIO 64 30TH ANNIVERSARY - Happy Console Gamer
Thirty years after Mario first jumped into three dimensions, Johnny Millenium sat down with an old friend to talk about it. "SUPER MARIO 64 30TH ANNIVERSARY" was the only new video on HappyConsoleGamer, and the description keeps it simple: Johnny and Rob Man look back at the game and reflect on it, then and now.
For a lot of viewers, the name in the description mattered as much as the one in the title. The most liked comments greet Rob Man like a returning cast member, and a few are already counting down to the duo's Christmas episode. The rest of the comment section reads like a shared photo album: a mall kiosk at Electronics Boutique, a console rented from Blockbuster with Pilotwings alongside, a full 120-star run finished at 17, a father who played with a newborn on his lap. Several people bring up the music and say it has stayed with them for decades.
The game earns that kind of memory. Super Mario 64 launched with the Nintendo 64 in Japan in June 1996 and set out much of how a 3D camera and a 3D platformer would work for years to come.
The anniversary piece passed 60,000 views in five days, and it shares the top of the shelf with two slightly older videos: Johnny's first thoughts on Final Fantasy Resonance, the series' first HD-2D entry, and Andrew's ranking of the best Super Nintendo RPGs. Views ran a little below the channel's usual pace, and about a thousand new subscribers came in, putting HappyConsoleGamer at 344,000. Among the gaming commentary channels nearest its size, Dumbsville is the one having the big week, while Game Sack and Lore Keeper Toby were quieter.

@AcousticMaster104See it on YouTubeI was a young lad of 17 years back when Super Mario 64 first came out, so I was old enough to fully experience it and young enough to still experience the magic. Proud to say I was able to finish it while collecting all 120 stars. Amazing game; one of my favorites of all time.
@gtsjoeSee it on YouTube$25 to rent the Japanese N64 and Mario 64 ahead of the international release, for 1 day.
We didn’t have a car, so we walked 10 miles there and 10 miles back carrying a black case holding the precious cargo.
We didn’t sleep for a day.@OriginalMastersSee it on YouTubeI remember my parents letting me rent the N64 console from Blockbuster as a 9 year old with this Mario 64 and Pilotwings. Nothing can capture quite how mindblowing the experience of playing Mario 64 for the first time was.
@positivevibrationesSee it on YouTubeThese videos let me pause all troubles in life and just go into pure bliss mode even if it’s 20 minutes just to escape to that time thanks John and Robert
