North Korea releases Kim Jong Un photos, their date unverified
Inside Edition's report separates newly published state-media images from proof of when they were taken.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 460,196 views a day, 13 times a normal first day on this channel (35,217).
North Korea Releases Photos Of Kim Jong Un After Death Rumors Circulate
A clothing and shoe expo is the setting for photos North Korean state media has released of Kim Jong Un after rumors of his death circulated online. But the pictures leave a crucial question unanswered: when were they taken?
In Inside Edition Digital's report, Mara Montalbano says outside media outlets cannot verify the date of the images, credited on screen to Rodong Sinmun. Their release is not the same as independent confirmation of a recent public appearance.
Montalbano traces the death speculation to an unverified social-media account from a Chinese dissident living in the United States. The report does not establish that Kim has died.
The short report drew roughly 236,000 views in eight hours, an unusually fast start for Inside Edition's Shorts. Its central difficulty is also the one Montalbano explains: North Korea's isolation and limited flow of information make reports about its leadership difficult to assess independently.
