Jaku explains Jenny's English-only problem in the Japanese dub

A reversed language joke in My Life as a Teenage Robot sends his commentary Short well beyond its usual early audience.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 165,797 views a day, 7.1 times a normal first day on this channel (23,280).

Jenny Speaks English in the Japanese DubJenny Speaks English in the Japanese Dub

Jenny's voice synthesizer gets stuck speaking Japanese in the original English version of My Life as a Teenage Robot. Translate that episode into Japanese, though, and the malfunction needs a different language to make sense.

Jaku's "Jenny Speaks English in the Japanese Dub" shows the solution: Jenny switches to English, delivered with a strong Japanese accent. The Short drew an estimated 166,000 views in its first day, roughly seven times Jaku's usual Shorts start.

The clips follow Jenny from handing over a gift in Japan to trying to explain the problem to Brad, Tuck and her creator, Dr. Nora Wakeman. "Why English? Why English only?" she asks. The words are understandable to an English-speaking viewer, but leave the people around her unable to follow her predicament. The dub changes the language while preserving the joke.

Viewers are asking whether the English dialogue matches what Jenny originally said in Japanese. Others suggest fan edits that collect all the English or all the Japanese dialogue into a single version, turning the dubbing workaround into another viewing possibility.

Jaku has been decoding cartoon dialogue, as we reported here, including French in Bluey and backward speech in Ninjago. This time, the interesting detail isn't simply what a character says. It's how a translation keeps her from being understood.
