Bill Clinton cites a Quran verse his daughter once showed him

At a Florida campaign event for David Jolly, the former president says he is tired of Muslims being denigrated for their faith, and of the culture wars around it.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 504,568 views a day, 27 times a normal first day on this channel (18,479).

Bill Clinton: ‘I’m tired of people denigrating Muslims for being Muslims’Bill Clinton: ‘I’m tired of people denigrating Muslims for being Muslims’

Bill Clinton is tired. He says it twice in under a minute, first about people "denigrating Muslims for being Muslims," then about something wider: "the religious wars, the culture wars, I'm just tired."

The remarks come from a campaign event on Tuesday for David Jolly, who is running for governor of Florida. Middle East Eye's Short uses C-SPAN footage of Clinton at a lectern, with audience members seated behind him.

He builds his point around a family memory. Clinton says he first heard the passage from his daughter, who read the Quran "first from start to finish when she was 15" and showed it to him. In his paraphrase, "Allah put the different people on the Earth, not that they might despise one another, but that they might come to know one another," and "learn from one another."

Then he widens it beyond any single religion: "There are bad actors in every faith because we're all flawed human beings."

The clip has passed 475,000 views in its first 21 hours, a very different start from the channel's usual Shorts. The comments are moving faster than usual too, roughly fifteen times busier than a typical first day. Much of the discussion sets the speech beside Clinton's years in office and his recent politics, while other viewers welcome the message whoever delivers it.

The channel's second-busiest new upload sits in a much harsher register: footage of Israeli soldiers filming themselves inside a displaced Lebanese family's house before it was detonated.
