"I have come here to be arrested": India's Gen Z voter-roll protest
The Times' Short opens on a movement founder confronting officers as his flight lands in New Delhi, then follows the crowds into the street.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 376,834 views a day, 31 times a normal first day on this channel (12,302).
India Cracks Down on Gen Z-Led Protests
The arrests began before the protest did. The New York Times' latest Short opens aboard a plane that has just landed in New Delhi, where Abhijeet Dipke, a founder of the Cockroach Janta Party, faces officers who have come for him. "They are here to arrest us directly from the flight," he says, and moments later: "I have come here to be arrested. Arrest me."
The youth movement had called people out over India's voter roll, from which, according to the video, more than 130 million names were cut. Critics, the video notes, said the revision could entrench Prime Minister Narendra Modi's tenure.
What follows is a little over a minute and a half of street footage. Marchers carry banners under an overpass while police push their lines back. Journalists call out from bus windows while holding up their press credentials. Crowds chant for the resignation of Gyanesh Kumar, who was appointed chief election commissioner in 2025. One protester says the issue is not which party governs: "at the very least, the system should function impartially." Another, Prem Prakash, says those detained are being put on buses and dropped off again, and that the protesters are not afraid.
The Short drew close to 380,000 views in its first day, far beyond what the paper's Shorts usually reach. Its comment section filled up even faster, about seven times its usual pace, with viewers writing about the right to vote and about whom the police are sworn to serve. On the same day, the paper's Short on President Trump rebuking Ukraine after his Russian diesel deal also started well, at a fraction of the India report's pace.
