Diego Gómez's long-range chip lights up Brighton's five-goal derby

The club's highlights of the 5-0 win over Crystal Palace neared 700,000 views in eleven hours, and the comments keep returning to one strike.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 1,052,805 views a day, 173 times a normal first day on this channel (6,072).

Pascal Groß's free kick, deflected in off Jaydee Canvot, had already put Brighton ahead when Diego Gómez looked up and decided the goalkeeper was standing too far out. The shot came from deep in his own half and dropped over the Crystal Palace keeper. "Gómez, and he's gone for goal! Oh, my goodness me!" the commentator says, then adds a verdict: "one of the goals of the season."

The club's own Short of the goal is titled "Gomez from the HALFWAY LINE!" Under the full highlights, viewers have already started the goal-of-the-season campaign. One even estimates the distance and the speed of the ball. Others point to a young fan in the crowd holding his head in his hands after the goal, and to a run of Brighton results that has some comparing the club to Leicester's 2016 title team.

The rest of the reel is barely two minutes long and moves quickly: a counterattack for the third, a near miss off the post and then a fourth, Jean-Philippe Mateta hitting the crossbar for Palace, and Jack Hinshelwood finishing a corner for the fifth. The club's description calls it a historic match at the Amex. That is a big claim, but a five-goal margin in the M23 derby gives it some support.

Much of the talk is about Fabian Hürzeler, with viewers wondering what he is building on the south coast. The comment section filled at a pace the club's short uploads rarely see. This season had already put a Brighton v Arsenal reel among the channel's five most watched videos. The reel carries a paid partnership credit with a camera-gear seller.
