"Our friends died": Yellowjackets brings its survivors home for the final season
Paramount Plus's teaser trades the woods for a New Jersey welcome-home parade, and sets the last chapter for November 20.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 346,542 views a day, 50 times a normal first day on this channel (6,956).
Yellowjackets | Season 4 Official Teaser | SHOWTIME® Original | Paramount+
"You can just start at the beginning," an off-screen interviewer tells a survivor in grainy VHS footage stamped January 3, 1998. That is how Paramount Plus opens the teaser for the final season of Yellowjackets, the Showtime drama about a New Jersey high school girls' soccer team stranded in the Canadian wilderness after a 1996 plane crash.
For three seasons the question was whether they would get out. This trailer skips ahead to the part the show has always hinted was worse. Rescue comes in a burst of quick cuts, and then the girls are back in Wiskayok, under a welcome sign, in their mothers' arms. "I can't believe you're really here," one mother says. A man calls them "American heroes." A young man asks what it feels like to be home, and gets two words back: "It doesn't."
The interviewer's other question hangs over everything: "Is there anyone else out there we should be looking for?" The trailer does not answer it. The season's description adds a present-day plot of its own, with two of the grown-up Yellowjackets preparing to kill one of their own while an old flame rolls back into town.
The channel has had a string of quick starts lately, with Dexter, Tulsa King and Star Trek trailers, but this one moved faster still for a short upload, and its comment section filled in hours at a pace the channel's short videos almost never see in a full day. Viewers are combing it frame by frame. Many point out that the line about friends who died, and the rest who starved, scavenged and prayed, echoes almost word for word what adult Shauna told a reporter in the first season. Others fix on the closing shot of two figures in a snow pit, crying and laughing, whom they take to be Shauna and Lottie, and on the interviewer's question as a sign that someone was left behind.
And a good share of the comments say the same simple thing: they still cannot quite believe the show is ending.
