"More human than human" turns into a shackle in Blade Runner 2099's trailer

Prime Video's limited series, led by Michelle Yeoh and Hunter Schafer, premieres November 25, and its comment section is already joking about the century in its title.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 2,472,165 views a day, 178 times a normal first day on this channel (13,922).

Blade Runner fans know the phrase by heart. "More human than human" was the cheerful corporate motto of the replicant makers in Ridley Scott's 1982 film. In the new trailer for Blade Runner 2099, a voice turns it around: "that's not a slogan, it's a shackle."

That line sits near the center of a trailer built around a missing-persons file. A woman studies records of people who vanished over the past year ("Ten females. Eighteen males") before a voiceover adds the twist: "All replicants." From there the search narrows to one man said to know "the cure for all replicants," while a young woman offers, simply, "I can help you." A title card credits Scott as executive producer, and the sweeping shots of pyramid-like towers will look familiar to anyone who remembers the first film.

Michelle Yeoh and Hunter Schafer lead the cast of the limited series, which arrives November 25. Released for New York Comic Con, the trailer passed three million views in just over a day, and Prime Video's channel as a whole had more than double its usual daily audience.

The comments came in roughly two hundred times faster than on the channel's usual short uploads. Many return to Denis Villeneuve's Blade Runner 2049, with viewers praising it and wishing he had stayed on for more. Others freeze the frame at the pyramids to compare it with 1982, wonder whether the off-world colonies will finally appear, or note that it looks stronger than an earlier glimpse.

The most popular joke is about the date: a November premiere, some point out, sounds much better than November of 2099.

  • Dune is great and all, but man I really wish Villeneuve would have made a Bladerunner trilogy instead. Bladerunner 2049 is still my favorite movie of this century
