How does a player who never scores end up as the name in the title of a seven-goal night? For Rio Ngumoha, it comes down to a single run. Just before the hour, he beats his man down the left at Anfield and slides the ball across for Alexis Mac Allister to turn in. Liverpool lead for the first time, 3-2.
"Another brilliant piece of play by the teenager Rio Ngumoha," says Jon Champion on commentary. That "another" is the point: Amazon Prime Video Sport's highlights treat the assist as the peak of an evening he kept lighting up.
The first half hour belongs to Villarreal. A back-pass from Virgil van Dijk falls short, and Georges Mikautadze scores inside four minutes. Sergi Cardona adds a second, and Alan Shearer, alongside Champion, does not soften it: "There's only one team playing out here, and it's a team in yellow."
The way back comes from set pieces. Mac Allister heads in a Kostas Tsimikas corner, and in stoppage time before the break Ronald Araújo levels from another corner, a header Champion calls "awkward, brilliant". After Ngumoha's moment, Florian Wirtz finishes low into the far corner. Tani Oluwaseyi's goal three minutes from time keeps it at 4-3 and keeps everyone nervous to the end.
The comment section moved at a very different pace from this channel's usual first day, with more than sixteen times the usual comments in just seven hours. The most discussed moment is the opening goal: many viewers ask why Van Dijk stood watching instead of chasing back toward the line, and the state of the defense keeps coming up. Others enjoy Araújo's celebration, welcome Wirtz finally getting on the scoresheet, credit Mac Allister and Tsimikas, and reach back to the Klopp years for a comparison with this kind of comeback.
Prime kept the spotlight on Ngumoha after the whistle. Andoni Iraola's post-match interview, in which the Liverpool manager praises him, and a short clip of Ngumoha reacting to what he calls a dream night both made unusually fast starts of their own.
