Being prime minister isn't Christopher Luxon's "greatest achievement," according to the title of his new Power Steering interview. RNZ's fifth episode pairs him with Anna Thomas for a conversation about his "classic Kiwi" childhood, meeting his wife and his interest in history. It offers a more personal counterpoint to the channel's campaign coverage.
RNZ posted fifteen videos over the week. The most watched new upload was "Fishing for votes: Luxon makes policy announcement on water | RNZ," with about 5,000 views. Its description places the announcement out on the water on Saturday. The Power Steering interview and "From driving pressure to getaway plans with Luxon | RNZ" had smaller audiences so far, but both were drawing views faster than the fishing-policy clip.
The selection also includes two Qiulae Wong uploads, one about her path into politics and another titled "Qiulae Wong's unexpected claim to fame | RNZ." Together with the Luxon interview, they give the campaign lineup room for the people behind the policy announcements.
Across the channel, RNZ added roughly 876,000 views and gained subscribers over seven days. Daily viewing is currently well below its usual pace, though that doesn't describe the whole week. Among similarly sized broadcasters, The Root and RTÉ News had larger weekly audiences; RNZ's weekly viewing was close to Washington Week PBS's. For RNZ itself, the strongest current momentum belongs to those new Luxon conversations.
