A ghost train, a giant pet crab and Johnny Marr in Margate
Robbie Knox's only upload of the week takes the Smiths guitarist from Dreamland's log flume to the Shell Grotto, with a stop to talk about Soccer AM and band chemistry.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
Is Margate good or rubbish? (with Johnny Marr)
Robbie Knox put one video out, and he spent it walking the Kent coast with Johnny Marr. "Is Margate good or rubbish? (with Johnny Marr)" follows the town-verdict format the channel has been running, but the on-screen caption sums up the guest with a wink: "Played guitar with every band ever."
The Smiths co-founder turns out to be good company for a seaside day. Outside Arlington House, the brutalist tower on the seafront, the pair talk about its reputation and Tracey Emin's connection to it. At Dreamland, Marr recalls O Dreamland, Lindsay Anderson's 1950s short film about the same amusement park, then feeds a 2p coin pusher. "I didn't have you down for such a capitalist, Robbie," he says.
The Ghost Train is scarier than either expected, and the log flume soaks them both. "So far this day is much more exciting than I was expecting," Marr admits, and soon after: "I recommend that everybody comes on this show."
The Harbour Arm is quieter. At low tide Marr notes "a pungent aroma," and over a table they compare their appearances on Soccer AM and talk about what makes a band click. Then comes the channel rule at the Crab Museum: the guest must come out with a fact. Marr's is the 1862 story of fisherman Thomas Gaskill and the enormous crab that became his pet. The day ends underground in the Shell Grotto, its passages lined with millions of shells.
The comments are mostly people trying to work out how this guest booking happened. Viewers imagine a wheel spinning out guest, town and ride, propose Celine Dion for Newport, coin "Marr-gate" and track Marr's jacket coming off a little more in every scene.
The video has passed 146,000 views and is doing most of the channel's work. Daily viewing is running at more than twice its usual pace, and about a thousand new subscribers brought Robbie to 196,000. Sly's Life and Riri Travels are also busier than usual among similar travel channels, while Liam Brown and Lifestyle Hal are having slower weeks. Behind Margate, the alcohol-tag experiment with Stevie White in Norwich keeps drawing a steady audience.
