Residents say decision to ban march not victory, but starting point #RTÉNews
RTÉ News returned to Garvaghy Road with a development beyond the blockade it covered in September: Northern Ireland Secretary Chris Bryant's announcement that he would ban the Orange Order Drumcree parade. The report was the most watched of the broadcaster's fifteen new uploads, reaching roughly 76,000 views.
A separate residents' response gave the story its next question: what follows the ban? Representative Breandán MacCionnaith characterized the decision not so much as a victory as a starting point. RTÉ's description connects the stand-off to the Parades Commission's earlier decision to allow the march down the mainly nationalist Garvaghy Road. That response clip remains among the channel's busiest videos right now.
International coverage is also drawing attention. Donald Trump's criticism of Norway over the Nobel Peace Prize currently has the strongest daily viewing of the channel's active videos, followed by the residents' response and his call for Ukraine to get a new president.
Across the channel, weekly views approached two million and subscribers increased modestly. Today's viewing is about half the usual daily pace, a quieter finish rather than a week without growth. Among similarly sized broadcasters, RTÉ had a substantial weekly audience, close to The Root's, while RNZ and Washington Week PBS had smaller weekly gains in views.
There was room for a less weighty question, too. After a Cork shop sold a jackpot-winning Lotto ticket, RTÉ asked shoppers what they would do with the winnings. The Mahon Point outing brought everyday daydreaming into a lineup otherwise dominated by public decisions.
