Bystanders detained the driver. In SBS News' morning bulletin, Acting Superintendent Ashley Mason says witnesses held the man before police arrived after MP Helen Haines was struck by a car outside her office in rural Victoria.
Newsreader Anjelica Waite reports that Haines is in critical condition and counter-terrorism police are investigating. The bulletin then widens the focus to threats against people in public office: Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke says reports of harassing and threatening behavior rose to more than a thousand in the most recent financial year, up from the year before.
Counter-terrorism involvement does not establish a motive. In a separate SBS report, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says the motivation is not clear and urges people not to speculate.
The morning bulletin drew roughly 47,000 views in its first eight hours, already far beyond the channel's usual full-day audience for regular videos. It is an audio bulletin over a static SBS graphic, rather than footage of the incident.
After the Haines coverage, Waite turns to localized night curfews in France, Japan's preparations for a sample-return mission to the Martian moon Phobos, and Alex de Minaur's position in the ATP Finals qualification race.
