Dentists and a 16mm camera helped launch the Coen brothers
StudioBinder's First Films essay follows Blood Simple from a pitch trailer to storyboards drawn in a New York apartment.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 47,418 views a day, 18 times a normal first day on this channel (2,692).
The Coen Brothers Figured It Out on Their First Try
Joel and Ethan Coen raised the money for their first feature before they had shot a frame of it. Their tool was a short trailer, screened for private investors, and the cinematographer they hired partly because he owned a 16mm camera was Barry Sonnenfeld, then new to features.
That is where StudioBinder's "The Coen Brothers Figured It Out on Their First Try" spends much of its time. The essay opens the channel's First Films series with Blood Simple (1984), the Texas neo-noir about a bartender, his boss's wife and the private investigator hired to kill them. StudioBinder is a film-production software company, and the video closes with a pitch for its own planning tools. New long essays here usually start slowly. This one passed 40,000 views in its first 17 hours.
The trailer idea came from the Coens' friend Sam Raimi. Sonnenfeld lays out the terms: "$15,000 got you one percentage point out of 50 available." Joel Coen remembers the chase for money as frustrating work that took about a year.
The shoot was planned just as carefully. "None of us had been on a feature film set before," Sonnenfeld says, so the team storyboarded the film in the Coens' Riverside Drive apartment. M. Emmet Walsh's summary: "They had it storyboarded to death." The plan called for camera moves the story did not strictly need, a custom rig built by grip Tom Prophet and saturated neon. Sonnenfeld's verdict on that approach is that "it makes the movie seem more expensive than it is."
The casting depended on introductions. Holly Hunter passed on the lead and pointed the brothers to her roommate, Frances McDormand, who made her film debut in it. Walsh signed on after seeing the same trailer the investors saw. He later concluded that nobody makes a film that good on a first try.
The comments read like a shelf of first encounters. One viewer saw Blood Simple in London the year it came out and picked the Coens for success on the spot. Another rented it on a video-store owner's advice. A third says it made them a cinephile, and a would-be director planning a first feature next summer asks for more of the series.
