Marianna Meléndez Ruiz opens with a list of things she is not recommending. "One of the greatest investments you can make in your life isn't just real estate, an index fund, or an extensive stock portfolio," she tells the room at TEDxHaverford College. "It's actually art."
The investing in the title is personal before it becomes economic. She starts with the books, records and art prints her parents brought home when she was a child. Then she makes a confession: "My own greatest personal investment became nothing other than music concerts," reggaeton and Latin shows in Puerto Rico among them.
Bad Bunny is the subject, not the speaker. Her case study is "No me quiero ir de aquí", the title translates as "I don't want to leave here", the San Juan residency built around his 2025 album, Debí Tirar Más Fotos. She calls Puerto Rico "as economically fragile as it is attractive", an island that depends on tourism and braces for every hurricane season, then puts up a slide on the money and jobs the concerts bring to local businesses. The on-screen date is April 25, 2025, a few months before the residency opened that July, so her figures were looking ahead.
The second half moves from spending to identity. She reads the island's history of colonialism and gentrification through the album and spends real time on the plastic lawn chairs on its cover. Her line on why it travels: "the thing about art is that it speaks no one language."
The talk, given by a student who was then finishing her first year, has drawn about 27,500 views in its first 11 hours. A regular TEDx Talks upload usually collects a few hundred in a whole day.
