Bruceploitation and barbarian knockoffs keep The Bad Movie Bible busy
Rob Hill's Borrowing Blockbusters catalog offers martial-arts imitators and a tour of the 1980s barbarian craze.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
Borrowing Blockbusters: Bruceploitation Part Two
The knockoffs kept working. Rob Hill posted nothing new on The Bad Movie Bible, but his catalog brought in about 36,000 views over the week, with Borrowing Blockbusters supplying the most active titles.
"Borrowing Blockbusters: Bruceploitation Part Two" is drawing the most daily views of the highlighted uploads, a month after publication. Part One is also among the channel's most active videos. Bruceploitation is the name given to the wave of films that traded on Bruce Lee's image and screen persona, often using performers with conspicuously similar names. It's a particularly apt subject for a series devoted to cinema's borrowing habits.
Then there are the swords. "Borrowing Blockbusters: Barbarian Movies and Conansploitation" has reached roughly 629,000 views more than two years after release. Hill's chapter list takes the genre through Italy and the wider world, with stops for Roger Corman, Cannon and Troma. The description also leaves room for a useful distinction: not every muscular 1980s barbarian movie was simply a Conan rip-off.
The subscriber count stayed unchanged, and daily viewing is running well below its usual pace. Among similarly sized commentary channels, Comedy Bites Vintage had a busier week and is viewing above its typical daily level, while Ben's Take was quieter. For Hill, the enduring draw is unusually specific: two Bruceploitation installments and a much older expedition into cinema's sword-wielding opportunists.
