Tyson Ridenour puts bench press slingshots to the test

His fast-moving Short shifts attention from enormous lifts to the equipment helping lifters move the bar.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 175,171 views a day, 20 times a normal first day on this channel (8,788).

Tyson Ridenour turns up in a black vest and tie, then pulls some unusually stiff bands out of a bag. The gym experiment that follows gets at a question behind those enormous bench press clips: how much is the equipment helping?

The Short, billed as exposing the secret of teenagers benching huge weights, compares heavy-duty bench press slingshots. These elastic supports stretch as the bar comes down and assist the upward press. That makes the lift different from a raw bench press, performed without that assistance.

Ridenour includes footage of Gentilelifts using the same style of support, then tries a band-assisted 405-pound bench himself. The bar moves quickly. "That was easy," he says, while his training partner suggests that learning the technique could make it easier still. It is a demonstration of assistance, rather than a measurement of exactly how much weight the band contributes.

The Short drew an estimated 175,000 views in its first day, nearly twenty times Ridenour's usual Shorts start. The comments also became much busier than usual, with viewers asking whether the bands are meant to improve an unassisted lift over time or simply make heavier loads possible. Others point out that supporting and controlling the bar still demands strength, even with help from the band.

What viewers say

  • I’m confused, does the slingshot make benching easier in general, or does learning to bench with it in place supposed to help you bench more in the long term?
  • wrist strength, shoulder, and elbow strrength is insanely strong to be able to even lock this weight out.

  • I don't understand why using those resistance bands ,why not just drop the weight

  • Just like when I use bands to do dips and pullups. Still means I can't do them unassisted just like these guys
