The Tripartite Soul - Purposes of College Education, Lecture 8
YaleCourses moved its Purposes of College Education series from a question about the individual to one about living together. "The Tripartite Soul - Purposes of College Education, Lecture 8" arrived first, followed by "Community and Injustice - Purposes of College Education, Lecture 9."
Plato's three-part account distinguishes reason, spirit and appetite: the part that thinks, the part concerned with pride and honor, and the part that wants things. It gives a course about education something more complicated to work with than simply filling a mind with knowledge. The series also considers character, citizenship and participation in a community, reading The Republic alongside thinkers including Confucius, Virginia Woolf and Martin Luther King.
The soul lecture was the week's most-watched new upload, reaching about 13,000 views. The community lecture is currently attracting more daily views, though the series opener, "What is College For? - Purposes of College Education, Lecture 1," has the strongest daily momentum of the three.
The channel added 10,000 subscribers over the week, even as daily viewing ran below its usual level. Among nearby university channels, University of Oxford is experiencing a pronounced daily lift, while Arizona State University had a larger weekly view gain than YaleCourses.
Beyond the new course, YaleCourses' most-watched regular upload remains a very different classroom destination: the 2009 Dante lecture "21. Paradise XXIV, XXV, XXVI," now approaching ten million views.
