Helen Haines was getting things out of the back of her parked car outside her Wangaratta electorate office, just after 3:30 in the afternoon, when she was hit by a Toyota LandCruiser. 10 News reports that the car struck her deliberately. The independent federal MP, who represents the regional Victorian seat of Indi, is in critical condition at Melbourne's Alfred Hospital.
"She is in the fight of her life," reporter Rebeka Powell says outside the hospital, where Haines is being treated for severe lower-body injuries. Victoria Police say witnesses detained the driver. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirms that the joint counter-terrorism team has been activated and says the motive is not known.
The attack opens the full edition of 10's Late News, which passed 200,000 views within 16 hours. A regular-length video on the channel usually draws only a few thousand on its first day. A separate report on Haines alone came close to that audience.
The bulletin does not stay on the hospital steps. Political editor Ashleigh Raper describes a changed climate for people in public office: "respectful political debate in so many cases has been replaced by shouting," she says. She treats this as background, not as an explanation of the attack.
The half hour then moves on. Queensland Police have not ruled out a connection between a man's death in Brisbane and dogs that attacked a jogger in the same area. There are riots across France, and four Canadian soldiers were killed in a blaze during a live-fire exercise at a base in Alberta. Later, presenter Ursula Heger's program returns to Haines with an update on the arrest.
