Christa Pike 'angry and confused' after two botched execution attempts, says her lawyer
A short clip from 10's Late News on the Tennessee death row case drew far more viewers than the Australian broadcaster's Shorts usually do.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 41,807 views a day, 12 times a normal first day on this channel (3,620).
Christa Pike ‘Angry And Confused’ After Botched Execution | 10’s Late News
Christa Pike, a prisoner on Tennessee's death row, woke up in a hospital after two attempts to execute her failed. Her lawyer says she is "angry and confused." That is the whole of a short segment from 10's Late News, the late bulletin of Australia's Network 10, and it is the clip from Thursday night that travelled furthest.
In 17 hours it passed 35,000 views. A Short on 10 News usually ends its first day with around 3,600. The full Late News bulletin from the same night covered Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor's High Court dispute, the release of one of the Snowtown killers and fans allegedly hit by nachos at the MCG. It drew only a fraction of that audience.
The comments came in even faster than the views. There were more than a hundred, on a channel where a new Short usually gets a handful. Much of the discussion turns away from Pike and toward the family of the person she was convicted of killing. Several viewers ask why the state would treat her in hospital only to try again, and others argue for life in prison instead. A few predict a lawsuit.
The story was not a local one for an Australian newsroom, but the clip's tags spell out where its weight lies: death row, execution, Tennessee.
