He was her Mr Darcy 🥹 - BBC Comedy
Miranda Hart's old school nickname is the clue that gives him away. Faced with a man from her past on Michael McIntyre's Big Show, she remembers an embarrassing game involving the names of boys she fancied. Her name in that game was Vera. His is Vere.
BBC Comedy's Short of the reunion reached roughly 230,000 views in 17 hours, far beyond the channel's usual first-day audience for Shorts. The exchange comes from the show's "Remember Me?" segment, with Hart seated in a theater box while McIntyre and her mystery acquaintance stand onstage.
Recognition takes a little work. Hart remembers long hair and cigarettes; Vere volunteers that he used to be thinner, earning a request from McIntyre to stop giving away clues. Then the nickname clicks into place, and Hart starts laughing at the memory she has to explain.
The recognition game becomes something more personal when Hart admits she fancied him. "You were like my Mr Darcy," she tells Vere, borrowing Jane Austen's romantic hero for her teenage recollection.
Vere, it turns out, hadn't understood his role in the story at all. "It didn't even occur to me that you fancied me, my love," he says.
