The Best Ever Food Review Show episode, titled "Why Everyone HATES Eastern European Food!!", has drawn nearly 600,000 views in 16 hours, an unusually fast start for the channel. But the sweeping title leads to a much more specific journey: Hungarian cooking, from market stalls to a restaurant tasting menu.
Food creator Beata Jambrik joins Sonny for beef goulash and lángos, the fried dough served here with garlic, sour cream and cheese. At Gettó Gulyás, head chef Kristóf Nagy explains paprika's place in the kitchen before preparing chicken paprikash with dumplings. The itinerary also leaves room for chicken gizzards and stewed rooster combs and testicles, very much within this show's adventurous eating territory.
The contrast is not simply familiar food against unusual cuts. At Stand Étterem, chef Benjamin Morris builds a refined goulash with charcoal-grilled Wagyu, rich stocks and several kinds of paprika. Culinary expert Rozina Wossala joins the table, where the menu also includes duck liver and Somlói Galuska, a layered sponge dessert with vanilla cream, rum and chocolate.
Viewers are questioning the framing as well as discussing the food. A prominent comment objects to placing Hungary in Eastern Europe, while Polish viewers send greetings to their Hungarian neighbors. Others recall meals in Budapest or mention cravings for gulyás from abroad. Sonny's broad provocation has produced a distinctly Hungarian conversation.
