Cherry pie comes with a small correction from Jason "J" Lee: he reaches for the familiar phrase about apple pie, then remembers what is actually on his plate. Great Big Story's road-trip host is eating his way across Kansas and Oklahoma, where the roadside attractions are almost as memorable as lunch.
"The Ultimate Food Guide in Kansas & Oklahoma (Route 66 Edition)" was the channel's only new upload this week, drawing about 34,000 views. Part of the 66 Plates journey, it moves from a vintage-themed bathroom at Gearhead Curios, where people have held weddings, to ham sandwiches at Nelson's Old Riverton Store.
In Tulsa, Oklahoma Route 66 Association president Rhys Martin joins Lee for smoked baloney sandwiches named after cities along the highway. Oklahoma City brings a change of menu: oysters and focaccia at Sedalia's, housed in a converted gas station behind a playground equipment business, followed by egg rolls and donuts at Quoc Bao Bakery.
The comments linger on particular plates, especially the cherry pie and Robert's Grill's onion burger. At that El Reno stop, owner Ed Graham supplies the episode's compact statement of diner philosophy: "No, don't usually change perfection."
Across its catalog, Great Big Story added roughly 1.3 million views over seven days, although its subscriber count slipped and daily viewing is running a little below its usual level. The new road trip is the most active of its highlighted uploads by a wide margin. Two older food outings remain in motion too: the Missouri chapter of the same journey and chef Chompon "Boong" Boonnak's late-night visit to Boston's JM Curley for a burger.
