Goliath death raises questions about closures of similar roller coasters
CBS Mornings pairs witnesses' accounts with a safety expert's explanation of precautionary shutdowns while the investigation continues.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 182,023 views a day, 13 times a normal first day on this channel (13,857).
Witnesses who saw man fall out of Six Flags roller coaster say it "should never have happened"
CBS Mornings correspondent Skyler Henry reports from Austell, Georgia, where investigators are examining the death of Hassan Kariem after he fell from Goliath at Six Flags Over Georgia.
Witnesses Vanessa and Fred Sowemimo describe the aftermath, including visitors emerging in tears. Vanessa's words give the report its title: "He flew out of his seat. That should never have happened."
The segment also addresses a question extending beyond the park: why have other roller coasters temporarily closed? Henry reports on precautionary closures at Six Flags and SeaWorld Orlando as state authorities and manufacturer Bolliger & Mabillard take part in the investigation.
Theme park safety expert Matthew Miller explains that pausing similar rides does not amount to a conclusion that all of the manufacturer's coasters are unsafe. He points to the investigation's findings as the next step toward reopening.
The report reached about 144,000 views in its first 15 hours, already well beyond the channel's usual first-day audience for regular videos.
Henry closes with the family's request that people stop sharing graphic footage of Kariem's death online.
