Police search for answers after man dies in tiger enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park
A man died over the weekend after entering the enclosure of a Siberian tiger at Yorkshire Wildlife Park in England. CBS Mornings put the story on its broadcast and posted it as a Short, with a warning that it contains graphic camera footage. It has drawn nearly 590,000 views in its first 14 hours.
Correspondent Tom Hanson narrates bystander footage, shared on social media, that shows the man sitting inside the enclosure facing the tiger, Altai. Police said he was seriously injured and died at the scene despite the efforts of medical first responders. The park closed on Sunday so staff could receive specialist support, and South Yorkshire Police said the man's family was being supported.
The park said Altai was unharmed and would not be euthanized. Back on set, Hanson tells the anchors it is unclear whether the enclosure will open as normal. "We don't know anything about this man," one anchor says. Hanson adds that, according to witness accounts, a woman tried to stop him before he overpowered her and went in.
The comment section has been far busier than usual for the channel's Shorts, with about 1,400 comments in its first hours. Much of that conversation centers on the park's statement about the tiger's future.
It was not the program's only report to travel widely. Kris Van Cleave's segment on a Lufthansa jet that aborted a landing at Los Angeles International Airport, after narrowly avoiding a tail strike, also drew a large early audience.
