Tesla's Roadster flips over a truck in Channel 4's report
The airborne demonstration drew an unusually large audience, while viewers asked practical questions about weight, cabin space and everyday use.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 772,449 views a day, 55 times a normal first day on this channel (14,080).
Elon Musk unveils new Tesla ‘flying car’
The landing needs thrusters. In Channel 4 News' Short, Tesla's redesigned Roadster leaves a steep curved ramp, performs aerial maneuvers over a Tesla Semi and another car, then hovers before coming down.
Elon Musk watches from the stage as the vehicle sends jets downward. "This will be an actual car," he tells the audience. Developed with SpaceX, the Roadster is scheduled to enter production in 2028, according to the report's description.
The spectacle brought Channel 4 News roughly 620,000 views in 15 hours, far beyond its usual Shorts start. The comment section was also more than twenty times as busy as a typical full first day, before that first day was over.
Alongside comparisons to Knight Rider and Toy Story, viewers raised less cinematic questions: how much does it weigh, and how much usable space remains inside? Others wanted footage from the audience's perspective.
Those questions sit beside a more fundamental uncertainty in Channel 4's report: it is unclear how the flying features would work on public roads, or whether they would be legal. Musk's own description of the vehicle, quoted in the accompanying text, is "not necessarily a safety-optimised car."
