The interpreter had never been in an aircraft before. Andy Stumpf learned that only after they were already airborne, heading toward a nighttime tandem parachute jump over Afghanistan.
That is the starting point of "The Worst Jumping Experience.", a Short on Cleared Hot Podcast that drew about 178,000 views in nine hours, already far beyond the channel's usual full-day audience for Shorts. The interview footage carries a MIKE DROP backdrop and is intercut with night-vision and aerial military footage.
Stumpf recounts how his passenger panicked at the sight of other jumpers exiting. Their own departure came late, and the parachute opened while they were spinning, leaving twisted lines. Then the passenger pulled a steering toggle, sending the canopy into a dive while Stumpf was trying to navigate.
"Mind you, I don't know where I am other than over Afghanistan," he says.
There was another complication: the passenger had vomited into his oxygen mask, and the contents were blowing back onto Stumpf's equipment. He eventually abandoned the GPS, aimed for a dry riverbed and brought them down, describing how he used his passenger as a skid to stop.
The story doesn't end at touchdown. Stumpf says he secured high ground and established communications before a Special Forces team retrieved them.
