Roman Reigns does not spend long on the people who call him overrated. "You already know I'm a metric mover," he tells Shannon Sharpe in the first minute of his Club Shay Shay episode. His view is that critics use his name because it brings them views.

He proved the point here. The interview passed 400,000 views in its first 12 hours, well beyond what a full-length Club Shay Shay episode usually draws in an entire day.

The more revealing hour comes later, when Sharpe raises nepotism. Reigns belongs to the Anoa'i wrestling family, and he does not pretend the name was no help. "The door opens for you, but what are you going to do when you get in the room?" he asks. He adds that his father told him what Anoa'i means: "last man standing." Viewers picked up the theme too. One of the most discussed comments says an inherited name brings responsibility as well as opportunity.

The acting talk is more practical. Reigns describes shooting the Street Fighter movie in Sydney, where his makeup at first took up to three hours a day. He rehearsed fights with Andrew Koji under stunt coordinator John Valera and looks back on Hobbs & Shaw with Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham and Idris Elba. He also has a fantasy role in mind: a part in an Aegon's Conquest project set in the Game of Thrones world.

Before wrestling there was football. Reigns played defensive tackle at Georgia Tech, where Calvin Johnson was a teammate, and he remembers Johnson's talent and work ethic. Then came rookie camp with the Minnesota Vikings, where he was diagnosed with CML leukemia and his NFL plans ended. He describes the months that followed: working for his sister's furniture business while his partner was expecting their daughter, and deciding to keep going. "God had a bigger vision for me," he says.

He closes on home life. He and his wife met in college and are raising five children, including two sets of twin boys. "Nobody in my opinion makes more of a sacrifice than our wives," he says.

  • People always forget about the responsibility of nepotism. Yes you get more opportunities. However you have to live up to the name or you have to go be better.
