Ukrainian drones set a St Petersburg oil terminal on fire
Euronews' minute-long report describes one of Kyiv's largest aerial assaults on Russia, then turns to rescue crews in Zaporizhzhia and Poltava.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 52,658 views a day, 23 times a normal first day on this channel (2,256).
Ukrainian forces strike St Petersburg and Leningrad region
Flames climb into the night sky over St Petersburg, and by daylight a thick plume of dark smoke is drifting across the city skyline. A Ukrainian drone attack on Sunday killed one person, wounded five others and set an oil export terminal on fire, the euronews narrator reports. Facilities belonging to the online retailer Ozon and the tech company VK were also targeted.
The report places the strike within a much wider night. "Kyiv launched over 1,000 drones across Russia in one of its largest ever aerial bombardments," the narrator says. Authorities said 144 were shot down over the Leningrad region, where fires broke out and homes and vehicles were damaged.
The second half moves to Ukraine. Firefighters and emergency workers enter damaged apartment buildings in Zaporizhzhia at night, and footage from the Poltava region shows destroyed structures and responders helping an elderly resident. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russian forces had hit substations in the Khmelnytskyi, Vinnytsia, Zhytomyr and Odesa regions, and that attacks on residential buildings had left two people dead.
The Short passed 40,000 views in its first fourteen hours, and comments arrived far faster than a usual euronews Short draws them.
It was not the channel's only busy upload of the day. A separate report on lingering tensions in Paris, with small gatherings and isolated fires on Sunday after Saturday's violent protests, also started far ahead of the usual pace. It follows the French unrest coverage we reported here.
