Quebec's minority result puts national unity on The Globe's agenda
Alberta investigations and an explainer on nine other referendum questions extend the coverage beyond Quebec's election.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
Parti Québécois to form minority government
The Globe and Mail posted thirteen videos, with “Parti Québécois to form minority government” drawing the largest audience among the week's new uploads: about 22,000 views. Its report centers on a complication for incoming premier Paul St-Pierre Plamondon's promised independence referendum: a minority government would need support elsewhere in Quebec's fragmented political landscape.
Alberta supplies the other major thread. Carrie Tait and Grant Robertson explain an investigation into separatists courting American support, work they conducted with Nathan VanderKlippe. A separate, newer video featuring Robertson is now the channel's most active upload by daily views. Close behind is “The other nine questions in the Alberta referendum,” with Calgary reporter Matthew Scace looking beyond the separation question to the rest of the October 19 ballot.
The channel added roughly half a million views across its catalog, while its subscriber count stayed unchanged. Daily viewing is currently less than a third of its usual pace. Nearby news channels RTÉ News and The Root had substantially larger weekly viewing gains, though both also have slower-than-usual daily viewing. For the Globe, the freshest activity is concentrated in explaining Alberta's choices before voters reach the polls.
