Higher Connections | Paul Smith LIVE at Hot Water Comedy Club

Asking someone whether they have work tomorrow is usually a straightforward bit of crowd work. Trace isn't certain, though, and Paul Smith hasn't yet discovered what she does for a living.

That delayed introduction is the engine of "Higher Connections | Paul Smith LIVE at Hot Water Comedy Club," which has drawn about 43,000 views in 11 hours, far ahead of the channel's usual start for a Short.

Smith begins by asking Trace about her day. She mentions a shower and getting her hair done; questions about her work produce the wonderfully unhelpful explanation that she and her companion "do business together." He keeps asking.

Then comes the occupation: psychic medium. Suddenly, her uncertainty about tomorrow gives him somewhere very specific to go. Smith asks how someone in her line of work can't see far enough ahead to know her own schedule.

The clip follows his fish-treatment conversation, as we reported here, with another front-row job reveal that changes the direction of the exchange. This time, Smith's first response isn't even a fully formed joke: he bursts out laughing and walks away from the microphone.
