Red mountains and campfire poutine on Jim Baird's solo expedition
His Northwest Territories film follows four rivers through the Backbone Ranges, with high water, trout fishing and wildlife encounters along the way.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
11 Days, 350 kms ALONE Through the NWT's Subarctic Backbone Ranges
Thunderstorms make an early complication in Jim Baird's latest expedition: rain raises the rivers, and the solo paddling gets rough. His only new upload, "11 Days, 350 kms ALONE Through the NWT's Subarctic Backbone Ranges," has reached roughly 179,000 views since Thursday.
The journey offers more than rapids. Baird's chapter guide moves through a caribou hike, a search for a hidden hot spring and a pair of difficult canyons. Later come bull trout fishing, fish stew and a visit to a Métis hunt camp. Campfire poutine makes a distinctly Canadian addition to the menu before the closing bear-in-camp chapter. The distances differ between the title and description, but the central undertaking is clear: a long solo passage through remote subarctic country.
Viewers are talking about both the scale of the landscape and the smaller routines that make the journey watchable. One singles out the drone footage, campsites and cooking; another describes making coffee and settling in for a feature-length Baird adventure. An older viewer credits these trips with encouraging their own solo outings with dogs.
The channel gained about 1,000 subscribers over the week and is just short of a quarter-million. Daily channel viewing is running above its usual pace. Among nearby outdoor channels, North To Alaska and Mangy dog tv had much larger weekly viewing totals, while Baird's week brought more views than several fishing-focused neighbors.
The new expedition carries by far the most momentum in his catalog. Iceland remains part of the active shelf too: "7-Days Alone Through Iceland: Volcanic Highlands to the Arctic Ocean" follows trekking with Baird's first packraft trip, while "Quilt Instead of Sleeping-Bag? (Going Light in Iceland)" tackles the less cinematic but essential business of reducing the load he has to carry.

@dedwin8930See it on YouTubeThere's not many YouTubers I would dedicate watching a 2 hour video they made - but your videos are definitely the exception! I've watched most of your videos and always get excited when a new one comes out. There's nothing better than waking up, making a nice hot coffee, sitting back and watching a 2 hour Jim Baird video. Looking forward to your next one!
